On 29 November 2020, the federal government announced an extension to the national HomeBuilder grant. If you’re planning to build a new home or substantially renovate one, you now have up until 31 March to sign your contract.
For contracts signed between 1 January – 31 March 2021, the grant amount will change and will be $15,000. For contracts signed before 31 December 2020 the grant amount is $25,000.
Great news if you’re in Victoria, the property price cap will increase to $850,000 from 1 January 2021. In WA it will remain at $750,000.
If you qualify, you have six months to commence your build (that is, substantial site commencement).
If you’re an owner-occupier and about to build your own home or renovate, you could be in luck.

This federal government initiative will provide eligible Australians with a grant of $25,000 (when their building contract is signed before 31 December 2020) or $15,000 (when their building contract is signed between 1 January and 31 March 2021) to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing one.*
The $25,000 grant is available for contracts entered into between 4 June 2020 and 31 December 2020. The $15,000 grant is available for contracts entered into between 1 January and 31 March 2021.
Substantial site commencement of a new home or substantial renovation must be commence within six months of the contract date.
